Become A Mentor and Help a Philadelphia Area Student Reach their Full Potential

The Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the Association for Talent Development (ATD) is proud to partner with the Collective Success Network (CSN). CSN's mission is to support and empower first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) college students to achieve their potential by providing mentoring, professional development, networking and leadership opportunities.

ATD is asking all chapter members to consider volunteering their time to mentor and support students that are involved with CSN.

Why First-Generation & Low-Income Students?

Talent Development Professionals are well-aware of needs in training employees within their own organization to keep up with the speed of technology and the pace of change in our society and the functions of roles within all organizations.

First-Generation & Low-Income students are particularly vulnerable to these changes.

  • Only 11% of FGLI college students earn a college degree within 6-years of enrolling in school compared to 55% of non-FGLI students
  • FGLI students 2x more likely to withdraw from classes
  • Only 1 in 3 low-income students have access to a mentor

In addition, Pennsylvania ranks dead last (#50 out of 50) for higher education graduation rates and burden of debt.

Students in Philadelphia can do better, and we believe our chapter is well-suited to help these students overcome these areas of struggle to reach their full potential. You can help by clicking the link below and taking the first step towards becoming a mentor for a FGLI student today!

How Mentoring Supports This Population

The National Career Development Association has identified three areas that negatively impact first-generation college students face when they enroll in higher education:

  • Lack of established networks
  • Fewer opportunities for professional development
  • feelings of exclusion

Overwhelmingly, members of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the Association for Talent Development have completed a college degree. By helping these students navigate the college experience, you will be able to help them access doors that were un-opened or not available to them.
